Update from 25 July:

WELL, WE DID IT!!!!!  After 12 days and 5 minutes, we crossed the finishing line nearly 3,000 miles later in Annapolis!  Over those 12 days, on a daily basis, we averaged 20hrs cycling, 2hrs sleep and 450km…and guaranteed that was easily the hardest event I have ever undertaken!!

So, on behalf of the MickRooCrew, thanks a million to everyone who supported us in some form or another – you know who you are!  Thanks a million to those organisations and individuals who very generously provided sponsorship – again you know who you are, and hopefully many others know about you now as a result!  And lastly, thanks a million to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance for giving us the opportunity to hopefully make a real and lasting difference to the lives of some of these beautiful kids with Cerebral Palsy!!!

Cheers, Mickey

Update from 25 May:

18 May - Here’s What They Say…

Race Across America (RAAM) is one of the most respected and longest running endurance sports events in the world.  RAAM is seen as a pinnacle of athletic achievement not only in cycling circles but in the greater sporting community as well. There is no other race in the world like RAAM – it is THE world’s top endurance cycling event! RAAM is the true test of speed, endurance, strength and camaraderie – there is no race that matches the distance, terrain and weather, no other event that tests the spirit from beginning to end.

The 2011 race will be the 30th edition of RAAM – in that time, less than 200 solo racers have officially finished RAAM, compared with over 2000 individuals who have summited Mt. Everest. This is possibly bigger than Everest?!
…and yours truly has managed to find himself on the start line as a solo rider, come June 15!!! Leaving the West Coast of the USA (Oceanside, California) and cycling just under 5000km in under 12 days to the East Coast of the USA (Annapolis, Maryland) is the challenge! I’m the only Aussie/Scotsman competing in this year’s race – I’d be only the second Aussie, but the first Scotsman to ever complete the race, which I fully intend to! And with the hand-picked support crew of the Super Seven in tow, we’re looking good – sharing the escapade are Celine Galvin, Dave Foley, Gary Picard, Greg Wallace, Roger Riley, Rusty Mackay and Stan Hyasatt.

http://www.raceacrossamerica.org/
The race crosses 12 states, climbs over 170,000 vertical feet (3 Ascents of Everest)! RAAM is about 30% longer than the Tour de France and racers must complete the race in roughly half the time allowed for the Tour De France.   To finish within the allocated time, riders typically ride for 20 hours covering 450-500km per day, and sleep for the remaining 4 hours! RAAM IS ONE CONTINUAL STAGE, SIMILAR TO A TIME TRIAL – EVEN WHEN SLEEPING, THE CLOCK IS STILL TICKING!!! OH, AND DRAFTING IS NOT ALLOWED!!!
So, looks like I’ve found the next course on the Endurance menu…plus I’ve also found a wonderful charity to support this time around, the Cerebral Palsy Alliance! And I know there are plentiful worthy causes out there, but the Cerebral Palsy Alliance has certainly impressed me in their vision, their energy, their enthusiasm and their efforts – please help out by contributing to the supply of 30 iPads and software which helps those with Cerebral Palsy communicate better?
